A perfect 10.
That’s the goal as LaGrange College prepares to kick off the 10th season of its popular 3D Journeys lecture and optional travel series with a preview Monday.
This series’ journeys – both armchair and actual – will focus on Switzerland and Northern Italy, a blockbuster destination chosen for its strong wow factor as one of the most scenic, historic and culturally intriguing regions of Europe.
“We are excited to introduce ‘Alps to Lagoon’ with preview lectures this Monday,” said Ann Beason, who co-chairs the 3D Journeys series with Nancy Durand. First Lady Celeste Myall also serves on the planning committee. “The session, at 10 a.m. in the Dickson Assembly Room of Turner Hall, will introduce the speakers and offer a taste of the lectures to be presented on the fourth Wednesdays, January through April 2020.”
Details and rates for a spring 2020 trip, hosted by President Dan McAlexander and Myall, will be presented at Monday’s event, and Steve Hart of Hart Travel Partners will preview the excursion which begins in Zurich and ends in Venice, with appealing locations, including Lake Como, in between.
Hosts emphasize that travel is not required to attend the free lectures. In fact, most of the participants who have filled the lecture hall for the past nine years do not make the trips.
“They come because the lectures are always entertaining and thought-provoking,” said Durand. “The Ds in 3D stand for discuss, discover and develop. Our audience members are a very diverse group of lifelong learners, and anyone with an interest in learning is welcome to attend.”
One of the founding principles of 3D, McAlexander explained, was to bring the community to campus and showcase the LC faculty, who were recently named to the Top 5 in undergraduate teaching among Southern Regional Colleges in the annual U.S. News and World Report survey.
“This goal to spotlight the exceptional expertise of our faculty has been achieved to a remarkable degree with lectures from all areas of specialty – from history to music, art to exercise, education to cuisine,” McAlexander said. “Additionally, in recent years, guest lecturers have added to and enriched the program.”
One of the best attended lectures since the series began came last January when 3D kicked off a study of Morocco with Duncan Sandys, a great-grandson of Winston Churchill, who spoke on the British leader’s fondness for and frequent travel to Morocco.
The 2020 dates and speakers include:
Jan. 27, Dr. Mary Ann Wilson, “La Dolce Vita and the Food of Northern Italy.” Dr. Wilson is a retired English professor and a former resident of Northern Italy.
Feb. 24, Celeste Myall, “The First Golden Age of Violins and Virtuosi.” Myall is a violinist, conductor and 3D committee leader.
March 23, Chase Hudson, “A Wine Tour of Italy.” Hudson is owner of C’Sons, Mare Sol and Beacon Brewing Co.
April 27, Dr. John Tures, “Rating the Italian Political Scene.” Dr. Tures is a Professor of Political Science.
A Dutch-treat lunch featuring Italian food and other choices will be available at Pitts Dining Hall following all of the sessions.
Guests should park at Sunny Gables Alumni House, 910 Broad Street, for shuttle transport to the door.

Scholarships are among the important annual needs supported by donations, and your support also gives the college more opportunities for large grants that help even more students. If at least 1,140 alumni join us in supporting students by June 30, 2020, it will show how passionate our alumni are about higher education and ensure students have the tools for a top-quality education.
